Miami's Mayor Francis Suarez Goes Crypto! Presidential Campaign Funded By Bitcoin And More!

August 6, 2023

In a move that shakes up traditional campaign financing, Francis Suarez, the Republican Mayor of Miami and 2024 presidential candidate, announced that he will be accepting a diverse range of cryptocurrencies as donations for his election campaign. This bold move is seen as part of Suarez's commitment to harnessing emerging technologies to democratize opportunities for wealth creation.

Suarez, a known Bitcoin enthusiast, took to CoinDesk TV on Friday to share the news. "Officially, my campaign is accepting bitcoin," he said, emphasizing that the move would help foster wealth creation not influenced by ulterior motives or political goals. Moreover, the campaign is not limited to Bitcoin and includes other cryptocurrencies like BCH, LTC, DOGE, XRP, ETH, SHIB, USDC, DAI, MATIC, APE, BUSD, WBTC, USDP, GUSD, and EUROK.

The mayor, who is venturing into the crowded race for the GOP nomination against front-runners such as former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, allows supporters to make donations as low as 0.00034 Bitcoin, equivalent to a dollar, through his official website.

Known for his commitment to making Miami a Bitcoin hub, Francis Suarez has been critical of the Biden administration's handling of cryptocurrency regulation. "The biggest mistake that this administration has made is they don't understand crypto, so they have gone to a regulated-by-enforcement mechanism as opposed to set the ground rules," he voiced during his appearance on CoinDesk TV.

Despite his experimental cryptocurrency MiamiCoin (MIA) seeing a significant drop in value since its 2021 launch, Suarez remains undeterred in his belief that the U.S. needs a president who understands the nuances of crypto technologies and artificial intelligence.

In a swipe at the concept of a central bank digital currency, Suarez argued that such an approach was against innovation. "Nobody wants the federal government knowing where you have your money and how much money you have," he commented. I totally agree with him!

Suarez's unique approach to campaign financing seems to be an extension of his passion for digital assets and his belief in their democratizing potential. Whether this will impact his race to the presidency remains to be seen. Will you support him? What's your opinion about Francis Suarez?
